Provide the student with structured hands-on activities that will help develop skills and knowledge needed to be a successful member of an Enterprise IT technical support group. In addition, the student may be prepared for taking A+, Linux+ and MCP professional certification exams. Server, desktop and laptop machines are combined with printer, network and mobile devices to simulate a complex small business LAN supported with Linux, Mac OS/OS X, Windows and Android operating systems. Applied projects will provide a variety of technical scenarios that focus on:
Computer hardware (i.e. CPU, RAM, DISK, Network and video cabling) inventory and testing.
Operating system installations, upgrades and patch management.
Configuration of resources and services including: AD, SAMBA, Network file systems, DNS and DHCP
Basic LAN user account management and installation of public domain software and mobile device applications.
Additional discussion items include: The role and associated tasks of the System Administrator; Ethics and privacy issues associated with maintaining IT resources; Communication, negotiation and leadership skills; Support policies, proceedures and service level agreement strategies. The course promotes the use of undergraduate research skills as it is primarily a hands-on lab environment but will have lecture periods to discuss non-applied aspects of system administration.
